BRAINSTORMING is valuable, so try a simple strategy like listing. Take out a sheet of paper, for example and write the words PROBLEMS IN X FIELD OF STUDY. Then list as many problems you can think of that a professional or company in your field would have to deal with. Talk to people. Your friends, family, classmates, coworkers, and professors can help you with ideas. Just talking to other people can create a list of ideas you might not think of by yourself. In the Unit 4, 6 and 8 Assignments, you were given a list of blogs and articles that lead to possible topics in your field of study. Go back to these instructions and check out that list to see if any of the topics there might be of interest to you. You can also search the KU library for articles about various problems in your field of study. AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE and some topic ideas Once you create a list of subject ideas, think about what you might do with one of the topics. Imagine you are working in your dream job in the future and think about whether the subject you are thinking about might be a problem that company might face and that you could help them with. Think about your audience and purpose. If you are studying law enforcement and you are interested in the subject of gang violence, for example, couldn’t you write your Unit 9 Assignment to recommend that the police department you are working for in your dream job deal with the increase in gang violence in their community (the problem) partner with a local after school program to create more activities for the teens in your community to keep them out of gangs (the solution)? OR, if you are studying the field of education and you are interested in reading for young children, could you imagine that you are working in an elementary school with low reading scores (the problem) and writing to that school to recommend a workshop be created to motivate parents to be more involved with reading to their kids (the solution)? OR , if you are studying psychology and an issue that interests you is drug dependency, can you imagine you are working as a therapist and the school where you serve as a counselor has seen an increase in teens who are abusing drugs in your community (the problem). Could you write to the principal of this school and suggest that she create a drug awareness program or offer a class in the dangers of drug abuse (the solution)?
