-large percentage of people in North America are overweight and fat.
-this presents a variety of risks; we are now more sedentary. (in terms of heart disease, not a good thing) -Average weight is now increasing, 1960 was 166 lbs for men and 140 women. By 2010 it was 196 lbs for women and 166 lbs for women. -People think they are not as quite overweight as they are. But weight IS increasing. -this has consequences; diabetes is increasing parallel to increase in weight. Greater weight, which leads to insulin resistance and diabetes follows. -in north America, we are not doing too well in rates of great weight. But also countries close to us and rapidly catching up. We see it in Asia like Japan and China where it wasn’t a problem before. But we are exporting our north American lifestyle and food there. -Not a single solution to this problem, it is a complex problem. It needs multi factorial approach to address it. Historically: -Hippocrates time, even concern with weight gain. He did have to confront this problem. The Run Naked Diet: -we have seen every kind of diet being promoted -1800, reducing soap, wash with this soap and fat melts away -we have miracle flab that melts fat away -burn it away with a bar -or take something to block fat being absorbed -rub some cream to get rid of cellulite -or you sweat it away -or eat fat free food -or you try to roll it away or electrify it away Diets: -can lose up to 17 lbs with the cabbage diet -or the mustard diet -low carb diet (dr. Robert Atkins, 1930- 2003 which was in charge of the Atkins diet) -we have low fat diet, but high in carbs (dean ornish in charge of this one). -isn’t much science behind a bunch of this -we even have previous pharmaprix owners writing books, we have psychologists, doctors and actors (suzanne somers) -Hard to imagine all of these are right. There is even the imagination diet…
--> all you have to do is think of something you like to eat, if you feel hungry, get yourself a handful of these candys and think about eating them. It is enough to curve your appetite. -If it doesn’t work…
-then you can take piece of cotton, moisten it with orange juice and swallow it. But it is harmful…. -we are even told to chew on ice, because when you get ice in your stomach, it melts, melting that ice requires heat input, it comes from body, we will be losing calories. It does make sense….but something wrong with numbers…don’t need a lot of calories to melt this ice. -to really understand what’s going on is to look at the science behind weight control. Video 2 Notes: Obesity: -linked to heart disease, high BP, cancer and diabetes. BMI: -accepted way in defining obesity Weight (kg)/ Height (m2) > 30 = OBESE. Smaller the number, better it is. Higher BMI, greater the obesity problem. Exception: -it is possible to have a high BMI, if you have a lot of muscle.
