images anonymously with a caption, comparable to the ‘memes’ of today. When one looks at 4chan, it can be somewhat surprisingbecause the site looks like something made in 1995. This site is where people have their friends and a creative outlet. These
Terhune 3aspects all go into Anonymous where people feel like they are part of a bigger thing and they can express themselves. During late 2006 to 2007, there was a transformation in the group, and everything became considerably more organized. Their first “attack” as a large group was against a man named Hal Turner. Hal Turner was a neo-nazi who had a podcast and spoke about his views. He attacked an Anonymous member openly. Anonymous DDOS his websites costing him tons of money in bandwidth fees. Fuck and Wagnalls stated, “This crude type of computer attack bombards a website with data requests, overwhelming and thus disabling it.”(“Anonymous.”) This attack was a real showing of what was possible when people in the group band together. Not only this, but they Doxed him, or got his personal information and started sending him pizza’s(which he had to pay for), escorts, and sent a bunch of pallets and industrial material to his house. This essentially broke his ability to pay for his radio show in a juvenile, fun, “Doing it for the lulz” way. They not only did that but hacked his email and found out he had been
Terhune 4an FBI informant, which made him lose all his credibility with the white nationalists. He then was prosecuted by the government for threatening his judges. Anonymous ruined his life, but essentially did a good thing by doing it. This is where Anonymous then start to look like a force for good and not just a bunch of trolls on the internet.
