Men are higher on aggression & personality traits that predispose you to aggression Psychopathy has a 2:1 sex ratio – men are 2x as likely to be psychopaths than women Psychopathy – callousness and disregard for emotions of other people o Psychopaths can experience emotions but have difficulty resonating w/ emotions of others o Emotions of psychopaths tend to be shallow – their highs aren’t as high, their lows aren’t as low They act out normal human emotions w/o really emotionally connecting w/ others o Psychopaths often described as very charming, sociable, extroverted, and good w/ people If people high on psychopathy violate rules, they don’t really feel remorse, guilt, or shame By the time a child reaches 4 or 5, they have developed some sense of empathy o Callous unemotionality – lack of guilt, shame, and remorse when doing something wrong o Usually developing children have a strong amygdala response to pictures of others in distress Amygdala – processes fear and negative emotions, responds to emotional info o Children w/ high callous emotional traits show no discernible amygdala response to other people in distress Children w/ high callous emotional traits are very slow fear conditioners o Takes them a long time to learn association btwn a stimulus and a previous neutral thing o One predictors of callous unemotionality is very harsh physical punishments from parents Callous emotional traits are still relatively unstable o Some kids are somewhat callous or unemotional, but they do learn some empathy in adolescence o People high in psychopathy are not necessarily violent or aggressive

Some level of callousness in some professions might be adaptive like being a doctor Narcissism – people feel they are special and powerful & that rules don’t apply to them o Another aspect of narcissism is idea of self-love and admiring oneself o One item on most well-known narcissism test is if I rule the world, it would be a better place When narcissists look at a video of themselves, they love it and point out good things from it o Narcissists are more likely to say they were sitting at head of the table even though the table is round Theory is that narcissists have a brittle ego under their image – they are trying to inflate themselves o If narcissists are criticized, they tend to lash out w/ reactive aggression Machiavellianism – involves getting power through whatever means necessary o Instrumental aggression – aggression to get to some goal, necessary to efficiently get to your goal Motivations for Aggression & Potential Mechanisms for Violence Psychosis – thinking things that aren’t true & seeing/hearing things that aren’t really there o People w/ psychosis can often plead not guilty by reason of insanity Psychopathy – longer prison sentence since you’re more likely to commit aggressive behavior o You understand difference btwn right and wrong, but you just don’t care Relational aggression – deliberately hurting someone by damaging social relationships, status, or belongingness o
