A given compound has the same relative ratio of atoms. Ex. Water 2H + 1O = H2O Hydrogen peroxide 2H + 2O = H2O2 What makes each element unique? The number of protons in an atom determines which element it is. All atoms of an element have the same number of protons in the nucleus. Neutral atoms have same # of p= as e- Atoms of an element which di ff er in the number of neutron are ISOTOPES. Isotopes will have di ff erent masses, even though they have the same number of protons, because they have di ff erent number of neutrons C= 6 protons If neutral atom 6 e- 12 C 6 p= 6n0 Atomic number - # of protons -> element # on periodic table
