o Accidental injury from biting cheek or tongue, or eating sharp, crisp food o Irritated mouth, gum, or palate o With treatment, determine cause or prior episode Tooth hypersensitivity Cold sores o Any herpes virus may cause oral lesion and is highly contagious Live virus in fluid vesicles transmitted by direct contact Virus remains latent in trigeminal ganglia and then gets reactivated by ultraviolent radiation, stress, fatigue, cold, or windburn o Infected for life o Occurs on lip or areas bordering lip Presentation: o Small, red, fluid-filled papule 1-3 mm in diameter May coalesce to become larger May have red inflamed border with crust on top Pus under crust may be secondary bacterial infection o Compare to make sure that it is not a canker sore Xerostomia o Reduced salivary flow or complete arrest o Medical conditions include Sjogren’s syndrome, diabetes mellitus, depression, & Crohn’s disease o Chronic dry mouth may cause tooth decay o Medications that may cause this: Anticholinergic, diuretics, antihistamines, decongestants, antihypertensives, antidepressants, antipsychotics, sedatives o Non-pharmacologic causes: Alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, mouth breathing, salivary gland stones, hot and spicy foods o Presentation: Talking and swallowing difficulty Stomatitis
