Gestures The use of non-verbal behaviors and gestures during messages being delivered can enhance a speech as well as decline it. Eye contact is one of the most note worthy behaviors that can affect the credibility of the leader providing a message. If a leader fails to maintain eye contact when speaking, they may appear dishonest or vague. “Studies on eye contact and its effect on communication and credibility find that maintaining gaze while communicating is beneficial to creditability and conversely averting eye contact is detrimental credibility (Fatt).” Other areas that have lowered credibility for leaders in regards to eye contact also include looking down at their notes for long periods of time, shifting your eyes around the room excessively, and blinking too much. Using gestures within communication is also a powerful way to enhance a message. A speaker who is just standing and talking without any movement becomes dull over a period of time. However, on the other side if there are too many gestures or movements it can become distracting and lose the audiences interest in the message. Gestures should be able to flow with the message in order for them to provide an advantage to the leader. The key to utlizing gestures is in the appearance of spontaneity and naturalness during effective communication so that the gestures do not come off as being tense or uneasy. Conclusion An effective leader must learn how to communicate and there are a number of ways to develop communication skills. A mentor who possess above average skills would be a good resource to assist in the attainment of the much needed communication skills. Leadership mentor and ask for their advice on communication, and act on that advice. Bookstores and libraries also offer many ideas for leaders to use to try and enhance their communication skills. Another alternative is to use management courses or professional public speaking organizations that offer training and skill building on communication. The goal of many of these organizations is to improve business leaders abilities to communicate and to become a dynamic communicator within any setting. Within any organization effective quality communication skills for leaders are the steps to success. When conveying ideas it is important that leaders are able to incorporate effective communication in order to enhance a successful organizational environment.
