Chapter 12 1. demographic factors (gender, race, age, ethnicity) do not predict juror verdict 2. presented strong and weak arguments involving a black and white defendant to a multi- ethnic group. when evidence was weak, more lenient on own race. when evidence was strong they are harsher against similar defendant (distancing themselves from their wrong-doing) 3. when race was a prominent issue at trial, white jurors did not want to appear prejudice and did not discriminate. when race was not an overt issue, white jurors did not bend over backward to avoid prejudice 4. a student and confederate are assigned to do a computer task with a specific key they are told not to touch. the computer crashes and the pair is blamed for touching the forbidden key. in one condition the confederate claims he saw the student do it, the student admits to do it. later the student tells another confederate that they actually pressed the key (they had internalized the accusation, really believing they were guilty!) 5. mock jurors had to rate a confession trial: control, no confessions: 19% rated person guilty. 2 group: person confessed right away (low-pressure) 62% rated person guilty. 3 group: defendant confessed out of fear (high-pressure) and was being physically abused, 50%! 6. taped mock confessions from 3 different camera angles so that either the interrogator or suspect or both were visible. those who watched the suspects saw the situation as less coercive than those who watched the interrogators. when camera is on accused, jurors underestimate the pressure by interrogators 7. a live staged crime act: those who drank fruit juice were more accurate than those who had alcohol 8. under the influence of alcohol people make false identifications when the actual
