The senate voted and found him not guilty by one vote. 1870 the Fifteenth Amendment is passed allowing AA the right to vote RECONSTRUCTION AND ITS EFFECTS 1870 All Confederate states are readmitted to the Union . Republicans ran the government. The South faced terrible economic conditions throughout Reconstruction. Plantations, farms , and factories were all destroyed . The population of the South was devastated . Southern state governments began to repair the states by raising taxes. Three different groups made up the Republican party in the South . Scalawags white southerners, small farmers who did not want wealthy planters to regain power and supported Northern Republicans . Carpetbaggers were Northern politicians and business men who moved South to reform Southern society and make money . AA were the third group who wanted to vote and take part in politics . Most Southern whites refused to accept equal rights for AA. FORMER SLAVES FACE MANY CHALLENGES – How did former slaves improve their situation? AA worked hard during Reconstruction. AA wanted an education by organizing schools, colleges and universities . AA founded their own churches and AA ministers became very important community leaders. AA participated in government by voting and organizing conventions to demand their equal rights under the law . Hiram Levels was the first AA senator.
CHANGES IN THE SOUTHERN ECONOMY – How did the Southern economy change after the war? AA wanted to own their own land but Congress did not give it to them. White southern planters wanted to return to the plantation system. Southern planters turned to two systems that kept AA under their control .Sharecropping which was when landowners(Plantations) give a few acres of land to their farmworkers who were former slaves . The farmers kept a small portion of their crops and give the rest to the landowner . Tenant Farming where AA rented land from the landowners for cash. Cotton was no longer in great demand and the price of Southern cotton fell dramatically. THE COLLPASE OF RECONSTRCUTION – Opposition to Reconstruction – What was the Ku Klux Klan? Southerners did not like the idea of greater rights for AA especially the RIGHT TO VOTE . Southern citizens formed terrorist groups that opposed these rights for AA. Ku Klux Klan used violence to keep blacks from voting and prevent AA from making any type of economic progress. 1872 Congress passed the Amnesty Act of 1872, which gave many former Confederates the right to vote. (AA vote disappears) Democrats began to regain power in the South. Panic of 1873 which led to a nationwide depression-northern economy collapses WHAT BROUGHT RECONSTRUCTION TO AN END? The country began to lose interest in rebuilding the South. Northern economy in bad shape could not afford to help the South anymore Republican power in the South weakens and Southern Democrats began to take over the South, which they called redemption.
