Chapter two: The literature review Translation has an important role in many fields in life such as education, economic and social system. Addition and omission are common in translation process; that the translator adds word or sentence to make the translated text understandable or omits a word or a sentence that may cause confusion or misunderstanding. A lot of studies have been conducted to identify the types and techniques of addition and omission in translation. Only the resent ones are discussed here. Rosma Puspitasari (2016) believes that both language and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) are so related in translation especially when two countries have to write an agreement of both sides with no misunderstanding. As a result, he found that addition techniques are the most to appear in the translation process than omission ones. Indeed, this enables the translator to keep the authenticity of the equality of his work to translate the Memorandum of Understanding texts. Hajer Khanmohammad and Ali Aminzad (2015) argue that addition and omission are widely applied in news translation which includes social, cultural and political news headlines. They found that political news headlines are exposed to modifications when translated form a language into another more than those in social and cultural news. These modifications include changing in the title and lead, omitting unnecessary information, adding important background information and changing grammatical structures. For this reason, the two scholars claimed that translators working in news agencies should be skilled and well trained for the job.
