The number that makes many consider Chile an aging country demographically is the general mortality rate of just 5.4 per 1000 especially when compared to the general mortality rate of 12.3 per 1000 in 1960 (Gitlin & Fuentes, 2012, p. 302). These numbers when looked at carefully show that not only is the Chilean population aging, but the government has to increase its funding for programs aimed at assisting the elderly in the population while also maintaining or increasing the funding for education to support the largest demographic age group (2012, p. 302-303) which can be rather difficult. Communication The official language of the Republic of Chile is Spanish with 99.5% of the population speaking Spanish. English is the second most spoken language in Chile at 10.2%. The indigenous people of Chile speak their own language for the most part accounting for 1.0% and

GLOBAL BUSINESS CULTURAL ANALYSIS: CHILE 6 another 2.3% speak other languages (Scroope, 2017, p. 3-4). These numbers account for more than 100% as the respondents in the survey were allowed to list two languages if they speak languages other than Spanish at home. The Spanish that is spoken in Chile is slightly different from the Spanish that is spoken by other Latin American countries due to the influence of the Mapuche indigenous people of Chile. Many chilenismos or Chilean Slang terms come from the blending of Spanish with the Mapuche language. Some indigenous words have been absorbed into the Chilean Spanish dialect which makes communication with Chileans slightly more difficult than just finding someone who speaks Spanish (2017, p. 6-7). Even though Chile has several different geographical length and several indigenous tribes that effect the diversity in Chile, there aren’t any true accent variations amongst the nation based on regions Silva, 2006, p. 2). This is very different when compared to the United States that has several accents that are easily recognizable as regional such as Southern draws and Appalachian twangs which are closer together than the major regions of Chile. Accents, however, are noticeable amongst social classes. These distinctions are sharp and consistent throughout Chile (2006, p. 2). This accent distinction is more comparable to that of Great Britain than that of the United States. Religion Most Chileans fall under the umbrella of Christianity with a large portion of them being Roman Catholic (73%) and another 15 % being considered Evangelical or Protestant. The largest portion of the Protestants are Pentecostals, approximately 90% of the Protestant population (2006, p. 8). The strong presence of Roman Catholicism in Chile is due in large part to the early Spanish explorers who first colonized the area. The Roman Catholic hold on the

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
