In IE, you can right-click on the top of your browser and select Menu bar to see and use the old-styled menu. Chrome doesn’t have this feature. 3.4.4 The Bookmarks (Favorites in IE) bar On the Bookmarks (Chrome) or Favorites (IE) bar (sometimes also referred to as a Links bar), you can add small buttons with an associated web address that links to the web page in question. It is a useful feature that is not often used by the average user. You can quite easily add to or change these links. By adding five or more buttons pointing to web pages that you visit on a regular basis (such as search engines that you use often), you could speed up your online activities quite considerably. This is perhaps the most important browser tool for power searchers. Using the Bookmarks or Favorites (notice the American spelling) facility (by right-clicking on it), you can add web pages to a folder for future reference. You can then choose to have the Bookmarks/Favorites appear on the bar as a clickable icon for future use.
26 Tips: Adding to Bookmarks/Favorites There are three important points to note at this stage: 1. Firstly, only a link to the web page is saved in the Bookmarks/Favorites folder, and not the web page itself. 2. Secondly, the description of the link is taken from the web page title and is saved in the Bookmarks/Favorites folder. When you choose to Add to Bookmarks/Favorites , the window that opens up already contains the title taken from the web page and this appears in a text box. You can change the title if you wish. Although most users don't do so, this is actually poor file management. As we mentioned earlier, many web pages have been badly named (and sometimes not even at all). Simply accepting the web page title as the description that will appear in your list of bookmarks/favourites may make it difficult to find what you are looking for at some later date. It would make more sense to change the description to something meaningful. 3. Thirdly, creating new folders to which you allocate meaningful names is a very powerful file management tool. Think carefully about what will still mean something to you two years from now if you return to your Bookmarks/Favorites folder to find an old web page. It is possible to save folders within folders. All you need to do is to highlight, with a single click, the folder in which you want to create a new folder. Once you have highlighted the folder, click on the New Folder button and the new folder is now created within the previous one. Using this technique, you could create a whole series of levels of folders for better file management. Don't go overboard, however, as too many levels of folders can become unmanageable. 3.4.5 The main window This is where the web page appears. The main frame of the window may have an up-and-down and/or a left-to-right scroll bar. The main window is where you will spend most of your time when searching and browsing the web.
