EU is going to be restrictive with the UK exit so that they understand the pain that they are about to face o Restoration of the nation state Experiment Sovereignty showdown Restrengthen great nation 194 sovereign states; “nation states”; aren’t that old; few hundred years; Backtrack globalization; want control of their own country; play by themselves; National pride Uk on wrong side of history o Free trade pacts o Military pacts Nation states- going downhill UK- fighting good fight- good but they are isolating themselves in the coming mid to late 21 st century Populist movement: fuels similar type thinking- rise of conservative right o Peer pressure; similar themes; isolation; no immigrants o Donald Trump: no more trade o Anti-globalization protest; protest nonetheless BREXIT: o Smaller narrower isolated Britain future o Different and isolated and more blinders o Will lose their voice in the largest trade block o EU is bigger ecnomy than the US Trade issues and many other issues o Britain sat at big boy table- lost all their rights No voice at all o No tariffs but now there will be o Harder to move goods and services in the UK borders; increased cost o Relocating plants and companies from UK Internation companies used to have no tariffs and now they are going to be taxed when they go to other countries- 27 other countries Increased economic friction Northern Ireland- decade long civil war- who wanted Northern Ireland to Ireland or stayed in Britain Reerupt if Scotland became independent o UK is gambling on world-wide return of nation state of political life o United Kingdom- once world wide empire; now an equitity with a shrinking economy Greater Welsh Empire
