the writer at the end of his narrative somewhat softens the tragic sound of the ending of the novel with the words of kind Maxim Maksimovich that misfires in guns often happen, and this has nothing to do with what some Cossack decided to stir this evening (Lecture notes, 4). Such a finale leaves room for reader to decide in his own way the conflict described by the author in the last part of his novel. The fate of the heroes of the novel "The Hero of Our Time", as a rule, is tragic. Heroes are eager for happiness, but they realize that they will not be able to possess it. Pechorin, finding no other way out for his thirst for activity, plays the fate of people, but this does not bring him any joy or happiness. Wherever Pechorin appears, he brings grief to people. He kills in a duel, which occurred because of stupidity, his friend Grushnitsky. When he was exiled to the fortress for a duel, he met there with Bella, the daughter of a local prince. Pechorin persuades her brother to kidnap his sister in exchange for a stolen horse. He genuinely wanted to make Bella happy, but he just cannot have long-term feelings for her. His eternal enemy –

4 boredom – comes instead. Having achieved the love of the girl, he grows cold towards her and in fact becomes the culprit of her death. The same situation with the princess Mary, which for the sake of entertainment he falls in love with, knowing in advance that he, does not need it, he is also a reason that Vera is destined to be unhappy. He himself says: "How many times already I played the role of an ax in the hands of fate! As a weapon of execution, I fell on the head of doomed victims ... My love brought no happiness to anyone, because I did not sacrifice anything for those whom I loved ... ". Maxim Maksimovich is also offended by him because he was cold when he met him after a long separation. Maxim Maksimovich is a very devoted person and he sincerely considered Pechorin his friend (Lecture Notes, 4). The hero of the story reaches out to people, but he does not find their understanding. Pechorin's bet is that his independent self-consciousness and will turns into something more. He does not listen to anyone's opinion; he sees and accepts only his idea of “right” and “wrong”.
