GUIZHOU TOURISM 6 seen to continue growing over time with increased investment in the industry. According to GPBS (2013), Guizhou received 214 million tourist visits in 2012. Most of the tourist attraction sites are located in the rural areas of the region. The World Tourism Organization states that tourists are more attracted to areas that are in rural areas. This is mainly due to the values and cultural and wildlife heritage. This seen to be a factor that reduces poverty in these counties through the revenue generated from tourism. The counties have structured the tourism sector in these areas such that the local community can access tourism and increase their economic standards. For this reason, poverty reduction in the region has been linked to tourism. In an interview with CNN, Shen Yiqin, the governor to the province stated that the province is becoming a paradise for entrepreneurial investors (CNN, 2019). In the year 2017, the GDP grew by 10.2% from the previous year. The economy is on the rise for the past years is seen to improve with time continually. Highly urbanized areas are less attractive, and hence most tourists tend to look for places that are less urbanized to enjoy the peace found in the countryside. This has led to the rapid advancement of ecotourism in the countryside. After the development of the ecotourism in the region, the number of Ecotourists to the region increased from the year 2004. From Table 2 below, it is understood that the number of visitors increased nine times from 2004 to 2010. This is evident after the inception of ecotourism in the region. Sustainable tourism in the region is seen to have a focus on the protection of the environment to maintain the integrity of the industry.
