Rasheed was during a fight with Mariam and Laila by Mariam hitting him in the face with a shovel. The same shovel used to bury the TV, something the taliban, another oppressor, took away. It is something used to bury things, like how Rasheed buried her freedom. Mariam also said she wanted Rasheed to see her face before she hit him the first time meaning she wanted him to know that after all those years of abuse she was taking her life back. Mariam turns herself in to the police and takes full responsibility for the murder to allow Laila to get away without any consequences. This shows a mother figure moment for Mariam. Mariam used a shovel and hit him in the head= the way he thinks is wrong and is being punished for it. A shovel=buried the TV which stands for oppression of freedom and Mariam ends their oppression of freedom by killing him. Mariam final moment of life is the way of her gaining freedom because she is no longer

suffering and in a better place, she chose her fate.Question 4Women in Afghanistan have a very difficult life to live. They are restricted in everything they do. They have to do everything their husbands tell them to do and are basically personal servants to them. They cannot have an education if they are already poor and don’t have connections. One can conclude that womenare looked down upon in such culture. In the more secular Afaghan culture education and careers are available to everyone enem women. The secular culture also doesn't punish/look down on the way women look/present themselves. In the traditional afghan culture womenare equivalent to mules in the way they are made to obey, work, serve, and be only for their owners their husbands. From the book i have learned that in Afghanistan it is hard for women to get an education. Most people there are against it. Like how Mariam wasn’t able to get an education. Laila is the only women in the book to have a good amount of education because her father was a teacher and more up to date with the world. Brings to my attention how fortunate I am to have an education while there are other girls in the world dying to have one but cant. As far as the culture it was interesting that in Kabul there was the mix of different beliefs and ideas. There were traditional-minded people like Rasheed who has multiple wives, makes them stay in the house and wear a burqa. While on the other hand there’s girls who walk around in dresses and heels, wear makeup, and actually socialize. Laila was able to go school and Mariam mentioned that some woman even had jobs and were driving cars.Afgan culture= just like Asian culture. Girls must be modest , covering up so no exposure of skin like how the ladies wear burqas and can’t be seen around boys when reaching teen years or it’s poorly looked upon/gossiped about. Makes it seem like people are more similar than we think based on stereotypes portrayed by news.
