After assessing Talia’s struggles I examined her culture and her family’s culture
characteristics. Many Asian’s living in the United States experience discrimination.
Discrimination occurs when people of one culture or group is treated a different way or omitted
from activities because of another culture or group (Pasha-Zaidi, 2015). With her not identifying
with her Asian culture Talia does not have the knowledge to understand how or why these
situations are happening to her. The United States is a country that allows immigrants to gain
citizenship and participate in civil duties. The saying, “the melting pot” which meant the United
States inspires persons to integrate into a conventional culture. This viewpoint has since been

substituted with another saying, “salad bowl” which encourages multicultural instead of the
standardized general identity as the typical in this society (Pasha-Zaidi, 2015). The United States
maintains the fact that groups and cultures deserve the right to uphold their views of their
community cultures and speech considering these cultures and speech do not battle with the
principles of the country. If Talia knew the importance of diversity within cultures and the
background of her culture she just might take pride in it. If her dad had taught her the culture and
maybe about her ancestors, she would be able to stand firm in her identity.
After examination of Talia’s culture and culture identity, I recommended intervention
plans to assist her with resolving her conflict which will improve her self-esteem. First, I will
encourage Talia to reach out to her father and ask him to educate her on the Asian culture as well
as her ancestors. Her dad has the ability to break the cycle of failure by being supportive of her
willingness of wanting to know her culture and promoting Talia’s self-esteem growth. If Talia’s
dad is not supportive, I will assist her in obtaining research about her culture including her mom,
