Vault’s Verdict: Like Goldilocks, DLA Piper associates find the amount they work to be just right—a balance which the firm encourages with flexible face-time, an entrepreneurial culture, and respectful partners. In fact, associates don’t mind putting in the hours when they get to work with some of the most high-profile clients in the world. But the firm’s sheer breadth sometimes results in a somewhat unwieldy, opaque administration, leaving some associates wanting more transparency, especially regarding bonus calculation. Satisfaction • “I do interesting work for partners whom I like personally and respect and who have taken care both to provide good opportunities and to protect me from internal politics. And I’m paid well for the privilege. Hard to beat this.” • “My practice group is led by incredible leaders who value hard work and personal life outside of work. I am being mentored and provided with space for a personal life.” • “Even as a first year, I work on a variety of interesting projects and have a lot of client exposure. The firm is supportive, as are my colleagues and supervisors. The hours are manageable and the compensation is market. Firm-organized social opportunities are rare, even within practice groups.” Associate/Partner Relations • “Individual associate-partner relations have been very positive. The partners value associate contributions and regularly give associates high levels of responsibility. The firm’s leadership, however, rarely communicates the bases for its management decisions.” • “Relations are generally very good. Most partners (with few exceptions) take an intense interest in teaching and developing associates, and there is a general atmosphere of respect and collegiality.” • “Partners treat associates very well. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
