The representatives are elected to the legislature through general popular vote, and is given a six-year term. After the term, representatives cannot run again for the same position. How is the legislature organized? In the congress, there are two houses, which are the Senate and the House of Representatives. Then, there is a House of Deputies. What role does referenda play in the state? Referenda are used when deciding on a controversial topic. The most notable referenda was held in 1854, when the citizens were asked whether Santa Anna should remain as a president. How are the elections competitive (or non-competitive)? Be specific.

In Mexico, the elections are very competitive. Political campaign is a huge part of the election process, and many candidates attempt to portray a positive image of him or herself and gain the votes of majority of the people. What are the major political parties? What are their platforms and who do they generally draw votes from? PRI is a party with the longest tradition, and it attempts to draw votes from majority of the working class. PAN is a party in opposition to PRI, and it attempts to draw votes from citizens with higher socioeconomic standing. PRD is a third party that still holds some votes. It attempts to draw votes from all the population. What are the major interest groups and what role do they play in the state? The major interest groups are the teacher’s union and the labor union. They deliver the voice of the working class, and attempt to affect the public policy to pressure the government to provide more benefits to the working class. What role does the military play in the state? The military plays an essential role in the state. It is Mexico’s source of power and control. This can be seen through Mexico’s political history of military leaders rising as political leaders.
