Anxiety is always associated with codependency. According to Reynolds & Lynn (2012), codependency is a dysfunctional helping relationship in which one individual support’s another individual’s alcoholism, drug addiction, immaturity, any forms of addictions, irresponsibility and under achievements among many others. A common characteristic of codependency is an overreliance on other people to gain approval and sense of identity. A codependent is a person who finds it extremely difficult to function from his/her innate self and whose behavior and thinking is organized around other individuals, substance or processes. Codependents are psychologically or physically addicted (Reynolds & Lynn, 2012). Examples of codependency

Characteristics of Codependent people Extreme desire for approval Extreme guilt over minor mistakes A tendency to remain in unhealthy relationships due to fear of loneliness Great fear to be abandoned No trust in others or in themselves Lack of better communication skills Difficulty in individual decision making As a family counselor, I have learned the importance of cognitive behavioral therapy and family therapy in codependency treatment.
