Core Beliefs Viewing pornography is against Christian beliefs for several reasons. For one, the seventh commandment is referenced in Matthew 5:27-28 (NIV) that explains why masturbation and/or pornography is immoral, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This Scripture versus may be directed towards men but it applies to both counterparts. Looking at another with lust in their heart is deemed as adultery. Men and women should only have eyes for their partners and anything else, even thoughts, is considered cheating. Another Christian core belief is “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and the sexually immoral” (Hebrews 13:4, NIV). It clearly states that God will judge adultery because it is a sin against the covenant in marriage. Adultery includes masturbation and any other form of sexual activities that should be reserved 2
for a married couple. Sex is meant to be pure and to do that one should not be influenced by the expectations that pornography creates. Today, people suffer from disillusionment and seek the comfort of modern idols which can include “sexual promiscuity, pornography, or even the pornography of violent films to games” (DiVincenzo, 2014, para. 43) when they turn away from God. The activity may feel good and replace feelings of angst or emptiness temporarily. However, from the Christian perspective, the need for fulfillment of these emotions with modern idols are driven from the inherent human desire for God who can actually satisfy humans. Those who seek these images are searching for a loving relationship with God that is soul-satisfying and to ease their pain. Resolution As a Christian, the right resolution would be to change habits to stop one’s self from viewing pornographic materials. Pornography negatively affects the marital relationship between a man and women and the relationship between man and God. It is a sin to masturbate and view this content because it disobeys God’s seventh and tenth commandment. TJ should block his access to pornographic materials by establishing censors or software that block adult content websites. Or cable providers can block specific channels. To stop the triggers, or temptation, from occurring TJ should change habits to avert his eyes to stop fueling the lustful thoughts.
