Berlin is important!!!!! 1988-1989 the USSR is going broke, morally and politically bankrupt USSR begins to release its political hold on the Eastern states 1989- Eastern states were liberated due to USSR going bankrupt After Poland and Hungary protested to get out of the Soviet system, (even in East Germany) everyone gave up November 9 th , 1989- East Berlin let its citizens go over to the West Watch Out for: o Changing political systems in this one year o Changing economic systems in this one year o Pay attention to lifestyles in East Germany as it transitions What happened in Berlin is what eventually happened to all of Europe in a post-Soviet world Outro Major theme: Transition of economic and political systems in Berlin, Germany, and Europe as a whole Soviet system ideologically wasn’t a complete failure enacted by dictators In the 1960s and 1970s, Eastern Europe was at its technological peak o Big industrial cities o There was a period in which the Soviet Union was way ahead of the US in space exploration o People were upbeat, modernized, and employed o Soviet tried to make it so there were no winners or losers in society When Alex’s father leaves his mother, she gets ultra-nationalist and does community events in support of the party Western society is losing the sense of community Eastern Europe had All of this came at a price of “political repression” which is why people wanted to get out of the Eastern Block/Eastern Berlin during the Cold War
