Just like someone who would commit a physical crime, cyber criminals can also be held responsible for their actions. Tracking these individuals can become a great task, depending on how much the attacker knows about programming. A hacker can delete their footprints by having their attack go through several servers in multiple countries, making them very difficult to pinpoint. However, it is not completely impossible. To catch these criminals, authorities use tactics such as baiting them and history tracking (Fogarty, 2011). Essentially, bait would be set for the hacker to pounce on. Once they do, authorities would have the information they need to move in and make an arrest. The longer approach would be to follow the tracks back to the original source. This may not always be successful, but it does allow them to catch amateur hackers causing big problems. References Albanesius, C. (2011). The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
