Due to my own self-disclosure, I am left feeling susceptible to boundary limitations. The incoming counselor with ongoing apprehensions, may find self-disclosure to be embedded in the counselor’s individual desires- causing damage to the client. Self-disclosure is not ethical in professional counseling (). As a professional counselor, I would self-disclose when it is fitting, for instance developing relationships built on trust and collective encounters. Currently, effectiveness is imperative, the disclosure would not adhere to my personal itinerary, but would strictly benefit the client. If my own personal disclosure becomes of concern to me, I will speak to my supervisor. In turn this may become a beginning to self-care. Counselors who ignore the warning signs of self-care may cause significant harm to their clients (). Self-carePersonal maintenance is an imperative factor of being a healthy counselor. A counselor who is not healthy could experience moods of dis-stress, complete burnout, or actual depression. Without addressing these feelings, the repercussions could affect the counselor’s objectiveness,
awareness and expertise. This gradual process may lead to serious consequences (). At this point the beginning counselor could unintendedly cross the boundary drawn between personal and professional views. Counselors should be trained to handle their clients with compassion, admiration and caution and yet, not forget the themselves, key person. If the therapist is not in decent physical health, they will cause detriment to themselves as well as the client. Presently my life is managed in self-care through thought and exercise. Forthcoming, I am determined to dedicate myself to seek an outlet through partnering with a fellow counselor, proper diet and exercise. My faith and hope are anchored – through Godall things are possible. These words will always keep me grounded as my counseling journey continues. These progressive steps of self-care will deliver a gracious and optimistic attitude thatwill help me stay objective and helpful to various populations of clients, associates and environments. ObjectivityCaring and thoughtfulness are expectations that must be maintained by identifying and putting your findings into practice. Being objective means more than tolerating words and the ability to recite the ACA codes of ethics dealing with objectivity that “safeguards the integrity of the counselor-client relationship” (). Sustaining neutrality is the best practice to provide a sense of protection for both the client and the professional. Additionally, the counselor must treat the client in an appropriate and ethical manner ().
