Lastly, Taiwan’s own foreign direct investments were a huge factor in increasing GDP and GDI. By moving productions to China to take advantage of labor arbitrage, they could cut costs significantly. First modeled in the shoe industry, and then later through FOXCONN’s approach within the tech industry, Taiwan has demonstrated how it can be a leader in foreign production, supply-chin management and administrative organization. As we can see from graph 4 exports increase from the 70s through the 2000s increasing both GDP and GDI. Due to the aforementioned policies and practices which stimulated exportation and removed the trade deficit this increase was able to occur. Thus, we can see that economic development in Taiwan was a multifaceted process influenced by the interweaving of cross-generational policies, cultural and political practices, and the evolution of society as a whole. 4 | P a g e

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
