cushioning. One other type of bedding/resting system used does not have individual stalls, but rather is a large pen area called a bedded pack that accommodates a number of animals. In a bedded pack, the bottom layer may be dirt or sand with softer bedding like straw, cornstocks or other organic materials on top. The pack is allowed to accumulate and the top layer is re-bedded as needed for comfort and cleanliness. With rising costs, many dairies have installed manure handling systems to recycle or reuse bedding materials and even manure. Sand lanes (long concrete lanes for sand to drop out of liquid manures) use gravity to remove sand for recycling. Commercial sand separation equipment is also available to extract sand for reusing as bedding. Since sand is so abrasive, it increases wear on equipment and moving parts, but is considered a good bedding source for cows since it is inorganic. Separating and partial drying the "solids" portion of the manure has also become more popular as an alternative to purchasing bedding materials off the farm.
