Before the start of the school year, both Leilani and Jennifer went on house calls to each student’s home in order to connect with the families and allow the students to interact with their new teacher before attending school. This was a great strategy to develop rapport with each individual in the classroom since not every child had yet had the opportunity to attend a classroom setting or have separation from their parents or guardians for such a lengthy time frame -- for many entering Kindergarten, a sense of unfamiliarity and lack of security and be experienced. So, to have had the opportunity to meet the teacher in a setting most familiar to one’s self with family, is a great strategy to provide students the opportunity to connect with their new teacher. Another method Leilani uses to connect with her students and create rapport is to have a student of the day or student of the week where each student has the opportunity to share with the teacher and their classmates a little bit about themselves in the educational setting.
