Rendezvous system
1820s mountain men would stay in the mountains all winter long. In July, trading companies
would send boats and wagon trains up the Mississippi River. For 3 weeks, there would be giant
parties with large of liquors and trade for pelts.
More efficient way to make money. Fur, trade, bring back, process….
Mountain men could stay up high, make money, and trade in the 3week Summer. Last
Rendezvous in 1840-41.
Treaty line 1819. Revolution in Mexico -> all of Spain in Mexico. United States had joint
occupation with Great Britain at this time.
Jim Bridger (1807-1870) discover of Great Salt Lake in 1834.
The overland trails (Oregon, Santa Fe)

Black trail following the root of the mountain men. 1840, Bridger established a fort,
as wagon trains filled with farmers would go to the Oregon countries and settle in the
land of valleys in Portland. 1840s first wagon trains headed westward in California.

Santa Fe trail out of St. Louis. Expanded 1830s-40s. Also brought people westward
Oregon Treaty (1846-1847): Negotiating tables split the Line of 1818 further into the Pacific
Ocean. North is Bridge Columbia. In the South contained Idaho, Montana, Wyoming…etc
Mexican Cession (1848): while the American was successful in the Mexican War, they took
control of Santa Fe, marched into California ports.

Motors planed routes to the west. First continental railroad in 1869 from Omaha, Idaho to
California.
Waterways and the Iron Horse
Transportation required a lot of applied technology. Applied technology of steam power, which
had been used for stationary purposes (turning cranks, mills, textile plants), and turned into more
complex.
National Road. Idea that it would all the way to St. Louis. Basically a wagon raod.
“the colossus of development”
The pace of change had never been seen in the world before. Things have been changing fast.
Not necessarily mentioned at a great thing.
John Gast: American Progress 1872. Progress is coming, and wilderness is on the run.
Romantic Movement
Modern romantic movement began in 1700s and went on through into the 1800s.
Greco roman times.
Polytheism: gods were in nature. Gods were part of nature. Greeks were thereby perceived as
being closer to nature. As well as the Romans.
Began in the big cities, where people had become too civilized, and therefore started looking at
the nature
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Swiss philosopher. Wrote about nature and the virtues of nature. Called himself a primitivist.
Strength as nature, and derived as being close to nature. That “god” or “person” who lived so
much with strength was, to Rousseau, considered a noble savage. They were to be revered and
admired.
Lived in Paris, where he had done most of his writing.
