War Hawks * Tecumseh and Britain were allies. This angered the US. Western leaders like Congressman Henry Clay of Kentucky demanded war against Britain (known as War Hawks). * War Hawks wanted the British out of Canada. Other Americans demanded war because of British violations of American rights at sea. * Future president Andrew Jackson said war was necessary “for the protection of our maritime (seafaring) citizens impressed on board British ships of war”. War with Britain Begins (The three causes of the War of 1812 :1. British established a blockade on U.S. ships trading with France. 2. The British practiced impressments. 3. British allied with Native Americans in the Northwest Territory). * Congress declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812. First two years Britain did not pay much of attention to the war. They were too busy fighting Napoleon’s French Empire in Europe. * 1814 the British defeated Napoleon and turned their full attention to the war in America. * August 1814 a British expedition captured Washington, D.C. President James Madison fled the White House just in time to avoid capture. His wife Dolly (Guilford Co.) had insisted on staying to save important historical objects from the White House. * After burning the White House and the Capital the British moved north to Baltimore. September the British were defeated at Fort McHenry and forced to retreat. * In the north the British sent a force from Canada across Lake Champlain to cut off New England. The American fleet defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Champlain in September 1814.
