philosophy is to maintain inclusion and cultural sensitivity (2012). Additionally, because the patient has already established care with an obstetrician, I would consult with this physician prior to prescribing any treatments. During the physical exam, it would be prudent to inquire about the patient’s home life. Asking a question such as who the patient lives with is important in assessing this patient’s personal life. If they are in a relationship, it would be wise to ask about intimate partner violence. Domestic violence and aggressive behavior between partners is a major source of decreased life quality all over the world (Gaman, McAfee, Homel, & Jacob, 2017). Inter-partner abuse and violence are at least as prevalent in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) relationships as they are in heterosexual ones (2017). Addressing the spiritual needs of patients is critical in order to properly develop a treatment plan that meets the needs of the patient. For instance, performing a bone marrow transplant for a patient of the Jehovah Witness would be unethical if the topic of required blood transfusions after the transplant were not addressed first. In the case of the American Indian, spirituality is instrumental to health and wellness in many American Indian cultures (Hodge & Wolosin, 2015). Studies suggest that practitioners can meet clients’ spiritual needs by displaying friendliness and courtesy, keeping the client informed of medical developments, and exhibiting skill and proficiency in the administration of their duties (2015). As the practitioner, I would allow the patient the opportunity to discuss the role his spirituality plays in the development of a treatment plan for the anxiety he wishes to relieve.
