16/22Linear regression is a tool to look at relationships between variables. In thesimple regression you have a dependent and independent variable. It is basedon a cause­ effect and the independent is the cause and the dependent is theeffect. The formula that is used from the regression is Y=a=bx. a= the interceptand b = the slope. You can then use this formula to predict future periods. Forexample if you have 15 periods of information for two variables and want topredict the 18th period you would input 18 in place of x. This method ispreferred to others in question 8 when you want to predict for a future monthinstead of just the next month. All the ones listed in question 8 can only predictthe next month and not future months. in order for one to assess if there is ameaningful regression relationship you would look at the R2and multiple of R.

This means theindependent variable directly impacts the dependent variable. There is a directcorrelation between them. If independent variable increases by 35% thedependent variable should increase by 35%. The equation is Y=a+bX where ‘a’is a constant (intersection of Y axis) and ‘b’ is the slope. Finding the linearregression equation manually is possible by using the method of least squares.
