To maintain confidentiality within the reception and waiting room area, there are many
precautions that can be taken. The receptionists should never ask the patient for information
regarding the appointment, such as reasons for the appointment. The sign-in sheet at the
reception desk should not contain the patient’s address or phone number (Stanford, 2014). The
most it should contain is the name, the appointment time, and provider with whom they are

seeing. Also, any providers should not discuss patient information in the reception area or any
other area where other patients could potentially overhear (Stanford, 2014).
