To avoid a disturbance, he quickly brought the attention back on himself by relating to them about his own experiences. He as well had someone in his family killed by a white person. He understood it was not the same situation as has been for black history, but in the same instance had similarities, for the killer was white and had much hatred in him as well. He had experienced similar emotions and understood what they felt and what he was experiencing as well. His empathy on their feelings and being able to relate was well displayed. He stated, “For those of you who are Black, and are tempted to be filled with hatred and distrust of the injustice of such an act against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, but he was killed by a White man. But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make an effort to understand, to get beyond or go beyond these rather difficult times.” By saying this, it changed the audience’s psychology about the situation.
