lack of transparency exists because though the salaries are lockstep, associates are not told the ‘steps’ until the calendar year for which that salary is put in place.” Hours • “The work ebbs and flows and when the work flows the expectation is that you never say no which is challenging and leads to periods of very intense work. Work is not particularly evenly distributed but the good news is that face-time is not required and a lot of working from home happens.” • “While the hours can be long, it is very possible to maintain a work-life balance here. The firm places emphasis on creating well-rounded attorneys who can get away from their desks, both for professional development opportunities and for their personal lives. There is not a heavy emphasis on face-time, and it is not uncommon for people to leave work so that they can spend time with their families and then log back on to complete additional work from home.” • “I feel my work level is appropriate and manageable. Face- time is encouraged but not required. Some associates get more work than others, but this can depend on practice group and perceived competence.” • “I am very happy with my hours. I’m 80% FTE and the firm is very supportive of my reduced workload.” Compensation • “Despite being told I was highly valued, being above budget on hours, and having nothing but positive reviews, and the fact that we are told our department did very well this year, I was surprised at the very low salary increase and bonus this year.”

Associates are not eligible for performance-based bonuses unless their reviews ‘exceed expectations.’ Merely ‘meeting expectations’ is not enough to get a performance bonus.” • “I expected my bonus to be at least two times what it was. My bonus amount was the same that I received as a first-year associate at my previous firm—a much smaller firm, in a much worse economy.” Quality of Work • “I am fairly happy with the nature of my work. I am mostly given appropriate work; every now and then I feel like I am a little out of my depth or given assignments with less guidance than I want. But largely I am drafting dispositive motions, managing discovery, and going to partners to consult on the next steps in my cases.” • “I have an extremely varied set of assignments: I spend a lot of my time drafting correspondences to opposing counsel, drafting motions to the court, and overseeing a team of document reviewers. I also spend a large amount of my time on WestLaw/Lexis doing legal research, though generally prepare more informal write-ups of my findings.” • “My work assignments are appropriate, interesting, and high quality. I spend a good portion of my time on appropriate

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
