coli. (Mayo Clinic, 2019) There were no deaths associated with this outbreak. Adams Bros. Farming, Inc. recalled their produce on December 13, 2018 and has not shipped romaine lettuce since November 20, 2018. According to the CDC website, the outbreak was over as of January 9, 2019. PulseNet is a national laboratory that connects foodborne illness cases to outbreaks. (, 2019) Microbes have a DNA fingerprint and PulseNet uses that to track the source of the outbreak. In this case, the genome sequencing showed the strains of E. coli are genetically related. This means the people infected are more likely to share the common source of the infection. (, 2019) By using interviews and traceback, the CDC asked questions about the foods eaten and other possible exposures. Two illness clusters were identified at restaurants where ill people reported eating romaine lettuce. According to the CDC website, a cluster is two or more people not in the same household that are ill with a common event. The FDA was able to trace some of the contaminated lettuce back to Adam Bros. Farming, Inc. The farm was found to have sediment in the water reservoir that tested positive for E.coli. It remains unknown how the water supply became contaminated. At this time, the FDA continues to investigate other farms identified in the traceback.
