Doubtless, the person who was primarily the core of the destruction of the entire Athenian fleet is the Athenian general Alcibiades who deliberately lost this war so that the aristocrats could get more power resulting in the downfall of democracy. Consequently, representing the long-lasting struggle between aristocratic and democratic societies in the sense that Sparta was an aristocracy and Athens was a democracy. Conclusively, I will discuss why people like the anonymous author of "The Constitution of the Athenians" opposed the democracy of an Athens. To begin with, the author states that Athens' militaristic strength primarily lied within its navy rather than ground forces that included hoplites and cavalry. Consequently, stating that “if anyone planned a coup, he would do so in the hope of bringing in the city’s enemies by land. (Anonymous, pg. 18) This statement proves that the city of Athens lacks the melee infantry that makes it an easier to be seized through land than the sea. In fact, that is precisely what happened when Pisistratus rose in and out of power with his mercenaries. Furthermore, stating that the influx of money and time spent on celebrating "more festivals than any other Greek city." Meaning, that through the rule of democracy the city had a counteractive impact on public and private affairs that eventually breeds the lack of supplies when it comes to the war. 7 | P a g e
