Taylor didnt even know that turtle could get

This preview shows page 2 - 4 out of 4 pages.

Arizona Taylor had four flat tires filled with glass and Turtle was parched. Taylor didn't even know that Turtle could get dehydrated easily so if it wasn't for Mattie telling her and giving Turtle juice, Turtle could have easily died. On top of helping them just as travelers Mattie allows Taylor to keep her car in the shop until she has money to get the new tires which most people would not do because she was a complete stranger. Eventually when they know each other a little more Mattie gives her a job even though she has absolutely no experience. She takes the time to train her and even helps her conquer her fear of changing tires. Taylor desperately needed a job so Mattie once again saved her. Kingsolver uses the Rhizobia as a symbol for other characters in the book. They all help
each other in one way or another so they are all interdependent, just like Rhizobia bugs and bean trees. The smallest character Turtle helps people in way they probably don't even realize. She entertains them with the hilarious things she does, she brings them together and gives them a reason to be around each other, but most importantly, she actually strengthens the relationships between one another. Taylor might not have ever stopped when it was raining if she did not have Turtle so she never would have popped her tires and ended up in Arizona. Esperanza would probably not have gotten so close to Taylor if it wasn't for Turtle because she brings Esperanza out of her shell. The biggest (most important) character would be Taylor who of course helps almost every character in the book. She helps Mattie at the shop, helps Lou Ann with the house work, brings Esperanza and Estevan to a safe house and many other things.
