Pros and Cons of Levodopa Pros - Levodopa is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. If it is taken with food some patients may notice the drug in effect after 30 minutes of consuming the drug. - Levodopa treatment relieves some motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in early stages. - Those who take the drug often see dramatic improvement with their condition. Some even believe they no longer have Parkinson’s disease when on levodopa. Cons - This drug does have common side effects such as: nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, lightheadedness, lowered blood pressure, and confusion. - Uncommon side effects are: sleepiness and impulse control disorders (gambling, shopping, etc.) - Long term use of the drug may result in Dyskinesia. Dyskinesia is involuntary and erratic movement of the arms, face, legs or trunk. - Not a cure for Parkinson’s Lindsey A.

Magnetic Resonance Guided focused ultrasound “Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound” which uses innovative technology to make lesions without a surgical incision - This treatment currently still in research trials generates the same lesions as the surgical procedures Pallidotomy and Thalamotomy but through an incision less procedure. - Multiple beams of acoustic energy converge upon a small volume of tissue, destroying the target area and leaving nearby regions unharmed. - The entire procedure lasts two to four hours, and patients are awake and able to interact with the treatment team. This allows the physicians to monitor the immediate effects of treatment and make adjustments if necessary.
Tracey L. Pros & Cons of Magnetic Resonance Guided focused ultrasound Cons: The disadvantages, similar to other lesioning techniques, are that it is irreversible and permanent. Bilateral procedures are also typically avoided because dysphagia, dysarthria and/or cognitive dysfunction are unfortunately common sequelae. Since this treatment is still in clinical trials there isn’t too much information on it. Not many doctors are performing this treatment or have been trained on how to make use of the treatment to help people looking for other non-surgical treatments for Parkinson's. Pros: The advantages of this intervention are that it can be performed without anesthesia or incisions; it is non-invasive; and it takes effect immediately. Based on the current knowledge, Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound is still an experimental therapy. Therefore, from a neurological point of view, this intervention should only be applied if monitored with carefully controlled studies.
