Perna 3 The other metaphor is: “I have always been regretting that I was not as wise as the day I was born”, is relating to how as babies we didn’t have responsibilities or tasks to perform, only to be curious and observe everything around us, just like in the song, Stressed Out, by Twenty One Pilots, “Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days, When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out, Wish we could turn back time, to the good old days, When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.” Application The way that Thoreau calls out to the reader using rhetorical questions to make the audience think about the subject creates a great relationship between the viewers and the author. When I was reading this essay I often felt inspired to change how I went about everyday life because of how enthusiastic the tone was. I would use this device in my future persuasive essays because of the severe emotional appeal it produces using an overall passionate mood, intricate diction, and varying sentence structure.
