Public Information Officer and Joint Information System Roles The Public Information Officer (PIC) helps to support the Incident Command (IC) structure. They advise the IC on all public information matters relating to the management of the incident. The PIC handles inquiries from the media, the public, and the officials; emergency public information and warnings; rumor monitoring and response; media relations; and other functions required to gather, verify, coordinate, and disseminate accurate, accessible, and timely information. The Joint Information System (JIS) is an organized, integrated, and coordinated mechanism to ensure the delivery of understandable, timely, accurate, and consistent information to the public in a crisis. JIS includes plans, protocols, and structure used to provide information. Key elements include interagency coordination and integration, development and delivery of coordinated messages, support for decision-makers, and flexibility, modularity, and adaptability.

SUMMARY INCIDENT ACTION PLAN PHASE FIVE 7 Conclusion Ethics, standards, compliance, public information, and roles of personnel before, during, and after an event are all essential elements of emergency services and its responders. Without ethics personal and professional, standards, and compliance there would be no rhyme or reason to decisions being made, there would be no accountability as there would be no one-way things would be done, and responders and the public alike can be injured or killed. Without the public being informed before or as events happen, there would be mass hysteria brought on by the fear of not knowing what to expect or when to expect it to take measures to protect themselves. The roles of the PIC and JIS are vital to any incident as they are responsible for getting the information out there in a timely fashion and accurately, thus protecting property and life, which is the ultimate goal for any emergency service agency.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
