There are quite a few members of my class who worked in business previously or had a really good sense of their area of corporate law from relevant classes before they started work here.” • “Lots of NY and national law schools. Fewer regional schools from outside NY.”

353 Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2018 Edition MILBANK, TWEED, HADLEY & McCLOY LLP • “Top of the class and law review strongly considered. Clerkship always a plus. Milbank, however, is not restricted to certain law schools and is open to hiring from most schools should a candidate possess the desired qualifications of being smart, hardworking, motivated, self-starter, and team oriented.” • “We definitely attract a diverse, international group of associates, specifically Spanish speakers, as we do a lot of work in Latin America.” Interview Questions • “Typical questions—what brings you to the firm, what interests you in law, which departments are you interested in?” • “What type of work would you like to do? Why Milbank? How would the new rotational program (3 x 6 months in each practice group) impact on your learning process?” • “What has been the most difficult situation you have handled in your career and how did you handle it?” • “Primarily questions aimed at understanding the personality of the candidates at the lateral hire interview. Not many technical legal questions. Questions about past deals and involvement.” Lateral & Clerk Integration • “Laterals get a mentor to make the transition easier and there are specific activities for laterals aiming to facilitate the transition.” • “Assigned partner mentor and associate buddy, complete open door policy and questions always encouraged. Great review process and feedback.” • “No issues with lateral integration. They handle things very well.” OUR SURVEY SAYS Vault’s Verdict: Associates love the firm’s friendly culture, cutting-edge matters, and the fact that the firm will match market bonuses (literally) within minutes, without having a billable hours requirement. Although the [email protected] program gets high marks, junior associates find formal training lacking for the first couple of years at the firm. Associates are also disappointed that the firm canceled its popular three-month salaried pro bono fellowships, though they appreciate that the firm is otherwise committed to pro bono work. Satisfaction • “I am really happy working at Milbank. The people I get to work with are incredibly smart and put a lot of effort in taking the time to explain things to me. At the same time, I feel like my work is valued and appreciated even though I am a junior associate.” • “The work itself is very interesting and stimulating, it’s hard to imagine anything better. Hours can be long and unpredictable, making it difficult to have a social life. There are slow periods, but it’s tough to know when they will be ahead of time. You’re always on call. Partners are great practitioners, but few are great managers. I don’t think this

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
