Truman and Kennedy both _Republican_ American officials believed Vietcong continued to grow because Diem’s government was unpopular and corrupt Urged to create more democratic government and introduce reforms to help peasants _Strategic Hamlets_ Reform that made things worse _Moved villagers to protect them and also keep them from aiding Vietcong_ Very unpopular Resented being uprooted The overthrow of Diem Made self even more unpopular by discriminating against _Diem’s police killed nine people and injured 14 others_ Diem’s police killed nine people and injured 14 others Buddhist monk sets himself on fire as a protest Henry Cabot Lodge arrives in Vietnam in August of 1963 Learns quickly of Diem’s unpopularity was causing Generals to think of overthrowing Diem _Military Coup_ _November 1, 1963 seize power from Diem_ This made things worse US became even more deeply involved in order to prop up weak South Vietnam government.
