Chapter 13 • UsesofImmunologyin Diagnostic MedicineImmunofluorescent AssaysImmunofluorescentassays use microscopytovisualizethelocationanddistributionoffluorescent dyes taggedtoantibodiesinbloodand tissue samples.2.1 Direct Fluorescent Antibody TestThedirectfluorescentantibodytest(DFA)is usedtoidentifythepresenceofantigeninapatient.Itis used in cases wherethepathogen isdifficulttovisualizeordifficulttoculture.Itisperformedbytreatinga biopsyspecimenwithfluorescent-taggedantibodiesagainsta microbe.Ifthetissuespecimen fluoresces,Immunologythenthediagnosis isestablished.
