Chapter 10 1) Section 10.1 Question #1: Many biomes extend to higher latitudes in near-coastal locations compared to locations in the interior of continents. Why is this the case? Biomes cover the entire surface of land on the earth, and these biomes often extend to higher latitudes in near-coastal locations compared to locations in the interior of continents. The reason for this extension is because mountains often “alter the circulation of air and influence temperature and precipitation in the regions around them” (266). Because the proximity of bodies of water affects climate, daily and seasonal temperatures vary widely at locations within the interior of continents. 2) Section 10.1 Question #2: The climate-biome model reveals that every biome can exist at higher temperatures when the rainfall is also higher. Explain. A tropical savanna can exist at an average temperature near 30 degrees Celsius and an average precipitation of about 400 centimeters per year, but a tundra can only exist at a maximum of about -4 degrees Celsius and just over 100 centimeters of precipitation per year; however, a tropical savanna can also exist at just 20 degrees Celsius, as can a tundra at -10 degrees Celsius. biomes survive in such varying climates? The answer to that question is rainfall; the more precipitation, the higher temperature the biome can exist. The reason more rainfall results in higher temperature is because cold air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, and therefore, there are no regions with low temperature and high precipitation. 3) Section 10.2 Question #1: The diversity of tropical rain forest insect species is directly correlated with the diversity of trees and shrubs. Explain why. Given the consistently favorable climate, it should not be surprising that the tropical rain forest is a host to more animal species than any other biome. Most of these animal species come from insects, as there are literally thousands of insects in the tropical rain forest that have yet to even been identified and named. To put into perspective how many insects there are in a tropical rain forest, it is estimated that over 2,000 beetles are assumed to be supported in a single hectare. The reason the diversity is directly correlated to the diversity of trees and shrubs in the tropical rain forest is because of a high degree of endemism. Endemism is known as a consequence of evolution that made many ecological niches. This means that certain insect species live in areas where certain trees or shrubs are located, or in other words, they live in the same habitat and have evolved together over time to create a ecological niche. 4) Section 10.2 Question #2: The eastern slopes of mountains in Central America support tropical rain forest whereas the western slopes sustain tropical seasonal forest and savanna. What is the likely cause of this difference?
