good for getting ideas onto paper and hopefully generate more ideas to get myself started writing on a project, whereas if I am at the point where I could be freewriting my ideas I am probably far enough that I am able to start drafting. Idea generation needs to remain idea generation, if freewrite something I start thinking about my phrasing and soon it inevitably would become a draft rather than a brainstorm. Even then the temptation to just start with the first draft is still
Sida 8really hard to overcome as it just seems so much simpler. I have to sit at my computer typing up either of these I may as well type the one that I actually need to finish. I may gain more tools for writing but that has yet to change how writing itself is a tool for me.The other issue I never cover is my lack of revision of most my essays. This is in part that I tend to write singular drafts and revise as write but I do not take much time to review any paper I write. This is a big change I need to make as I progress through college in order to achieve a higher level of writing, that I tended to avoid in order to just get through the assignments. More and more now I learn that in order to meet higher criteria I need to go through this process and to take advantage of available resources. This is more important to me than trying to use some strategies for preparing to write. I can force myself to write a draft of a paper no matter the circumstances, what I cannot do is write a perfect draft without considerable extra effort. With that said even this probably will not serve me too far beyond academia. In the end the sharpest tool in the shed is the one that is prepped but never use. That is what writing has become for me a bunch of very sharps tools I am not able to bring myself to use. I do not expect to need writing nearly as much as others might, but I will do what I can to make the task easier. Writing can be very useful, I merely do not think the strategies I am learning now are actively shaping me as a writer. What does it mean to be a writer? Writing is a tool, not a means to an end, writing is how I use it, not how anything tells me to use writing. As long as need it, I will be stuck with using the tools I have been given.
