The content emphasis of children’s informational literature is documented fact about the natural of social world. Its primary purpose is to inform. Writing informational books is often referred to as expository writing or writing that explains. FICTION writing is called narrative writing, or writing that tells a story. Some countries now recognize a type of literature that has elements of both fiction and nonfiction, called faction. Structure- has to do with how the author organizes the information to be presented. Most informational literature is structured in one or more of the following ways: Description, Sequence, Comparison, Cause and Effect, Problem and Solution.
For readers: informational books must be written in a clear, direct, easily understandable style, facts must be accurate and current Informational Chapter book- large amount of text organized into chapters Informational picture book- illustrations and brief textScience and Social Science concept picture bookFact Books- presentation of information in these books is through lists, charts and tables Photo Essay- equally balances text and information EX: Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body – Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen 5.Biography- gives factual information about the lives of actual people, including their experiences, influences, accomplishments and legacies. The writing in biographies is more narrative in nature and adheres to the elements of fiction. Reading biographies benefit children in several ways. They find inspiration in stories of the lives and accomplishments of people. Students earn history from the context of the lives of historical figures. Readers also recognize the importance of childhood experiences, since many biographies for children emphasize the early years of subject’s lives. Subjects of biographies need to be interesting to children, facts should be accurate with no idealizationAn autobiography is similar in every respect, except that the author is telling about their own life. A Memoirs- focus on the authors lives , but have a main focus on the author’s revelations of what events in their lives meant to them, not the events themselves. The complete biography- covers the entire life of a personThe partial biography- covers only part of a life of the person ( a person that is alive or a young personThe collected biography- includes the life stories of several peopleThe biography series- multivolume set of books with each book containing one separate biography.
