Companies should implement training programs and development opportunities for anyone who may need more knowledge in the work area or for those who may have the desire to work towards leadership roles. As well as review all existing hiring and promotion practices to ensure they are not designed to exclude anyone from the selection. The benefit of adopting these practices is that a diversified workforce leads to an increase in creativity and productivity from the various ideas that the employees bring. If the company is looking to expand to international markets or have customers that speak various languages, having bilingual employees or those with various cultural backgrounds can make communication easier. The cost to adopt these practices is that time will need to be spent reviewing the existing practices and making necessary changes. This could require employees working overtime or having to bring an outside agency in to help. In order to implement training and development programs, these programs will need to be designed which may require additional resources to be purchased. Ethical Considerations If a company chooses to not voluntarily prohibit forms of discrimination it would most likely not be seen as ethical behavior and not recommended. Ethical behavior is seen as acting in ways consistent with what is seen as good values (Ethical Behavior, n.d). This behavior demonstrates respect for key principles that include fairness, equality, diversity and individual rights. When discrimination is not voluntarily prohibited, individuals are not being treated equally and there is usually a lack of diversity in the workforce. Not voluntarily adopting hiring and promotion practices designed to diversify doesn’t demonstrate the key principle of diversity. At the same time not voluntarily adopting these practices could be seen as not ethically wrong.

When hiring or promoting an individual the employer needs to keep that individual’s safety in mind while considering accommodations that can be made to give them a fair chance at the job. Recommendation I recommend that the retailer ensures all of the employee protections covered by anti- discrimination laws, as well as adopt hiring and promotion practices. Also recommended is that they voluntarily ensure employee protection against discrimination based on physical characteristics. The benefits of voluntarily prohibiting these forms of discrimination is greater than the costs associated. Voluntarily prohibiting forms of discrimination can avoid potential lawsuits which can have a lasting negative impact on the company, such as reputation damage or financial loss from having to compensate the employee. To ensure that all of the employee
