any kind of value the letter they sent to him had. MLK’s clever use of the rhetoric, and other poetic devices, set the base for not just a powerful letter, but an amazing piece of literature as well. Martin Luther King used many literary devices to add to the impact which his letter had. The use of ethos seemed to be the most effective device in this letter. MLK consistently quoted bible passages, Socrates, Amos, Martin Luther, Abraham Lincoln, etc. These phenomenal quotations allowed MLK to establish his authority and intelligence. Not only did he incorporate an exorbitant amount of fantastic quotes (from a jail cell, mind you), he also used terrific analogies which causes the reader to associate MLK with god-like men of history. At one point Dr. King uses this analogy to show the importance which being the leader of the Civil Rights Movement entails: “and just as the Apostle Paul left his village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco-Roman world, so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town. Like Paul, I must constantly respond to the Macedonian call for aid” (MLK). The profound quotes and analogies which Dr. King used, allowed him to properly deliver his message to the clergymen.
