because of the color of their skin. This problem is still prevalent today. Many people are still trying to clear their names of age-old crimes. Bishop and Osler state, “wrongful convictions matter to crime victims because convicting the wrong person leaves the real perpetrator free to commit more crimes, creates a new, innocent victim, and drains resources that could be devoted to victim services” (Bishop and Osler, 2015).The innocent are fighting for their lives, while the guilty roam freely. Until there are solutions to many circumstances surrounding wrongful conviction, this entity will continue to haunt the criminal justice system. Circumstances There are many different circumstances that result in the wrongful convictions of innocent people. One well known circumstance would be witness misidentification. Sandra Thompson states, “ many studies of exonerations find that erroneous eyewitness identifications play a part in over 75% of all wrongful convictions” (Thompson, 2009). Witness identification can be vital in any case, because it shifts investigators focus to that person in question. The investigator is trying to seek justice and place all the pieces to the puzzle. The eye-witness gives investigators a head start and sometimes the missing piece to the puzzle. They are crucial to the investigation, because they can also testify on the accounts of whatever crime was committed in court. Although this process does help the case, many researchers believe eyewitness- misidentification is also detrimental to the case. They feel that the accounts given by the witnesses are not always accurate. The inaccuracy is what leads to the wrongful convictions. The inaccuracy can be attributed to the failure of the witness to recollect what truly happened because their memory or perception is not what they may have thought it to

This saves them money and lives in the process. By exercising better judgement, they may increase the chances of halting wrongful convictions. Another circumstance that leads to wrongful convictions improper handling of evidence due to large forms of corruption. Evidence is used in each case to determine the guilt or innocence of an offender. It must be handled delicately and applied justly to the case. Evidence can be mishandled in several different areas, starting with police officers ending with prosecutors or attorneys. The police officers are the first responders to the crime and must preserve the crime scene for evidence. They can also take statements and begin to gather witnesses. The crime scene is where most evidence is gathered and begins the hunt for the guilty party. Officers may try their hardest to preserve the crime scene, but there are many uncontrollable circumstances that can contaminate the crime scene (Julian, Kelty, and Robertson,2011). Mishandling the crime scene decreases the effectiveness of investigations and provides a greater outcome for wrongful convictions (Edwards, 2005). Where the mishandling with prosecutors and
