THAT IS LEFT TO THE INTERPRETATION OF ANYONE. FOR SOME IT MAY BE THAT THEY DON’T DRIVE AFTER CONSUMPTION. FOR OTHERS, IT COULD BE THAT THEY BINGE DRINK ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY BUT NOT DURING THE WORK WEEK. HUMANS ARE SOCIAL CREATURES. EVEN PEOPLE WHO DEFINE THEMSELVES AS ANTI-SOCIAL USE ALCOHOL TO BREAK FREE FROM ANXIETY OR STRESS. FROM THE THREE EXAMPLES GIVEN ABOVE IT CAN BE DEDUCED THAT HUMANS DON’T REACT TO EVENTS, CIRCUMSTANCES, OR SITUATIONS IN A DIRECT FORM. HUMANS HAVE THE ABILITY TO THINK, BUT TEND TO ASSIGN EVENTS, SITUATIONS, AND ALL CIRCUMSTANCES A MEANING ACCORDING TO THEIR THOUGHTS. THIS MEANS WE CHARACTERIZE OUR ACTIONS AND THOUGHT BASED ON INTERACTIONS AND OUTSIDE INFLUENCE. (BURKE, 1980; BLUMER, 969).
WHAT PERPETUATES ALCOHOL ABUSE?Alcohol is consumed with the intention to celebrate, relax, and self-medicate. It’s easy to succumb to its seductive side effects. This side effect is the feeling that whatever is or has been bothering can subside at least for now. Chasing this feeling will only mask the real reason people choose to drink in the first place. Not every person who drinks, does so to self-medicate, those that do, become very reliant on it. Alcohol doesn’t cost very much and fills a hole for those needing physical, emotional, or psychological help. As a person continues to turn towards alcohol to put a band aid on their problem, alcohol being a depressant and naturally impairing a person’s judgement begins to be the only thing that the victim relies on because of its effectiveness, ease or access, and low cost. When in fact it only perpetuates the issue by changing the way a person’s body and mind functions without it. Alcohol isn’t just a physical addiction, studies have shown that alcohol abuse over time, actually changes the way a person’s brain works. Following along the same narrative alcohol addiction is hereditary and considered a disease now (Marisa, 2019).
